Writing Children's Books

The market for children’s books appeals to the general public. A lot of aspiring writers are interested in making their way into this crowded avenue. This means a lot of competition. If writing and publishing a children’s book is the starting point you want to make for your career, like I have always recommended, carefully lay out your plans. It’s not enough to have an idea about what to write, but also, what to do after you have finished writing your children’s book. You are giving yourself the advantage if you are equipped with the right information on what next step to make. In this article, I will be talking about some ideas to help you get started when you write a children’s book.

What is your concept? First of all, you have to understand that there are different kinds of children’s books for children of different ages. There are read aloud stories, easy readers, chapter books, etc. By understanding these kinds, you will be able to establish a concept for your children's book. Since your audience will be children, it is imperative that you write a book that will develop creativity and enthusiasm.

Once you have organized your ideas for your chilren's book, work out on the characters of your story. Again, you are dealing with young minds as your audience, therefore, you have to make sure that your characters are fascinating or interesting in order for you to take hold of their attention. If your character is as dull as dishwater, let me tell you now, your story will be indistinct. Your characters can be people or animals or any made- up creatures. Also, make sense of their involvement in your plot.

Speaking of plot, plan a synopsis or a summary, or an outline for your children's book. What will your story be about ? It should be engaging for children to read. You story can also convey a valuable message or lesson to your young readers. Through this, you are helping them build a good foundation in identifying right from wrong, administer ideas about decision- making, and consequences of every action. Create a plot that is inciting and fun. Include conflict or tension in the story and how the character had resolved such problem.

Provide pictures in your story. Create some illustrations to keep it interesting. Children's books with illustrations appeal to kids. Some ideas are, if you are planning of writing a children's picture book, remember to have less sentences and more illustrations. Make sure that the illustrations accurately balances with your narration.

Keep your children's book simple, yet interesting. Once you are done with your children's book, you can think about how you can have it published. Don't forget to read the second part of this article, wherein I will talk about how to publish a children's book.

I am an Elementary Education graduate and a licensed teacher but have never pursued the teaching route. I used to be a travel agent for almost four years; now I work in the Publishing Industry as a Publishing Consultant. So if you have a book and you dream of getting published, you can talk to me. My ultimate goal is to work for Discovery Travel and Living as a Travel Journalist. I will travel to the places I love to visit and write a book about it.
