How To Publish Your Own Book

I have put together the steps that you, as an author, can do to publish your own book. Now, these steps best describe the do- it- yourself process when you publish your own book. Read on.

1. After you have completed your final draft, unless you are an editor, you have to find and pay a copyeditor or a content editor to get rid of typos and grammatical errors.

2. You have to find and pay a cover artist or a layout designer to help you create a cover design of the book, add a barcode on the back of the book with the ISBN.

3. You have to purchase a block of ISBN. You can obtain this from Bowker.

4. Process the paperworks for copyrighting your book. Two (2) copies of your printed book is needed to support the papers and a certain amount of money that you can pay to the US Copyright Office for registration.

5. Get the design files saved as camera- ready files or print ready files.

6. Find and pay a printer who will print a set of copies of your book. These printers usually print in bulk, so there is a need for you to come up with another amount of money as your upfront payment for the production process and prepare a storage space that has climate control for these books.

7. You have to secure a web domain to set up a selling/ information site.

8. You have to find and pay a web designer to set up a website about you and about your book.

9. Set up an account with a credit card company to process payments for orders of your book.

10. Stock shipping/ packaging materials or open an account with a shipper who provides package tracking services.

11. You have to contact major book resellers like Amazon or Barnes and Noble to have them sell your book.

12. You have to contact bookstores to talk to them about having your book displayed on their shelves.

13. Keep track of your sales, for accounting purposes.

14. Hire a publicist to help you market your book.

These steps are some of the ways that you can follow if you are hell- bent on doing the publishing of your own book yourself. Of course, if you want to publish your own book, just like with making that concept into a written material, it requires great effort and time from you, and although this looks like too much work, once you have overcome this, the results can be to your advantage.

I am an Elementary Education graduate and a licensed teacher but have never pursued the teaching route. I used to be a travel agent for almost four years; now I work in the Publishing Industry as a Publishing Consultant. So if you have a book and you dream of getting published, you can talk to me. My ultimate goal is to work for Discovery Travel and Living as a Travel Journalist. I will travel to the places I love to visit and write a book about it.
