Publishing Terminologies
Acquisitions Board- A group of editors who are in charge in reviewing manuscripts submitted by agents or authors, before accepting or rejecting it.
Advance- A certain amount of money paid to the author for the expected royalty for the first print run.
Advance Print Run- Printing of a number of copies of a book that is completed before its official date of release.
Appendix- Part of book found at the end of a chapter or after all of the chapters that contains additional information about the chapter.
Back Matter- Parts of a book that can be found after the main chapters or text. Examples are appendixes, glossary or bibliography.
Barcode- Lines of different widths printed and found on the back cover of the book for identification and inventory purposes.
Brick-and-Mortar Retailers- Refers to the physical retail store.
Binding- The process of fastening or sewing together along the edge of the book.
Blurb- a short promotional statement or review about of a book or the author for recommendation purposes.
Camera- Ready- Means that a document is ready to be printed.
CMYK- Refers to the four basic colors used in printing. C stands for cyan, M for magenta, Y for yellow and K for black.
Content Editor- A person who edits the book not just for any technical errors such as typos, sentence construction, etc. but also providing feedback to further improve the content of the book.
Copyeditor- A person who edits the manuscript without affecting the content’s entire substance.
Copyright- Legal registration, protection and ownership of intellectual rights like any written and published literatures.
Cover Art- The design of the cover of the book.
Developmental Editor- An editor who improves on the overall organization of the manuscript.
Discount- Reduced selling price of a book price.
Distributor- Company or individual who buys books from publishers and resell these products to retailers.
Download- Transfer of file from a computer to a smaller to a smaller device.
EBook (Electronic Book)- Books that are published in an electronic format that can be downloaded to an eBook reader, handhelds or computer.
Economy of Scale- Advantages, cost- wise, to mass produce a product.
Editing- Preparing the manuscript by revising or correcting the content for improvement before finalizing it.
Endnote- Annotation found at the end of the document
Final Draft- The finalized proof
Footnote- A reference note and supplementary information found at the bottom of a book page.
Foreign Rights- Rights acquired to be able to distribute and sell the book in other countries.
Front Matter- Extra written material found at the beginning of a book.
Galley- Proof of the book that is sent to the author for review before approval.
Genre- Category or style of book. Genres include comedy, tragedy, romance, memoir, etc.
Ghostwriter- A professional writer who gets paid to write and gives the credit to someone else.
Graphics- Refers to the artwork, illustrations, photographs, tables, etc.
